Lightning Sketches (1907)
Early stop motion animation
Lightning Sketches is a silent film of 1907 directed by J. Stuart Blackton. The content of this film is quite similar to Blackton's previous short film The Enchanted Drawing released in1900. He used stop motion animation technique to create the animation sequences in this film too.
The story in brief:
The film shows an artist (J. Stuart Blackton himself) in his studio. He writes a word on a white paper and then converts it into a painting. He repeats the same thing with another word. Then a man comes to his studio presumably to make a sketch of himself. The artist draws his sketch and then offers him a cigar. The man exits smoking the cigar. The artist adds the cigar in the sketch and leaves the studio. Soon the sketched face wears a smile on its own. Then the artist draws a wine bottle and a glass and another bottle. Watch the film to see how these bottles come to life.
