Animated Cotton (1909)
Single line drawing
Animated Cotton is a British silent short film released in 1909. The film is directed by Walter R. Booth. Although the film shows a thread animating but the animation was not done using stop motion technique which was the popular method at that time. Rather the director chose to use reverse film technique to create the beautiful animations in this film.
The story in brief:
A person is seen soaking a ball of cotton thread in a glass of water and then create a beautiful flower with the thread on a film plate. Then the thread transforms into other designs and patterns all on it's own creatng one line drawings on a dark surface. The film is more than a hundred years old but has used the concept of one line drawing. This form of drawing is currently one of the most popular art forms worldwide and hence the film seems so very contemporary even after a century of it's making.
