Le peintre néo-impressionniste (1910)

The Neo-Impressionist Painter

Le peintre néo-impressionniste (The Neo-Impressionist Pinter in English) is a silent film with live-action and 2D animations in it. This short movie was released in 1910 and was directed by Émile Cohl. Émile Cohl (Emile Eugene Jean Louis Courtet, 1857-1938) was a French caricaturist of the largely-forgotten Incoherent Movement, cartoonist and animator. He is called ‘The Father of the Animated Cartoon’ and ‘The Oldest Parisian’. Although the film is mainly black and white, the film features occasional colored segments in certain scenes and the animated portions are tinted.

The story in brief:

In this short film Cohl offers a humorous take on the relationship between drawing and color. It also pokes fun at the behavior of modern art lovers, just before serious monochrome works became popular in the art world. The movie shows an artist attempting to sell canvases to a client, each seemingly painted in a single color. However, upon closer examination, subtle nuances and hidden details emerge, transforming the seemingly monochromatic surfaces into intricate and unexpected compositions that captivate the viewer's eye.
